Why diverticulitis didn’t exist 100 years ago
Hi John
About one out of 10 people over the age of 40 and half of the population over 60 are walking around with mysterious little pea-sized pouches protruding out of their intestinal wall.
Otherwise known as diverticulosis.
These little pouches (called diverticula) usually don’t cause symptoms—that’s why many people with diverticulosis don’t even know they have it, and typically find out through a routine colonoscopy.
Things change dramatically, however, if one or more of the diverticula become infected, also known as diverticulitis.
Then you can think of nothing else but the intense pain you’re experiencing, along with the fever, chills, vomiting and constipation.
Although diverticulosis is (sadly) relatively common nowadays, that wasn’t always the case.  As a matter of fact, prior to 1917 it was unheard of.
So what changed?” you may ask.  “What caused this phenomenon where this unheard of condition appears out of nowhere and eventually affects half of us in our mid-life?
Well, it’s not a genetic mutation.
It’s not a condition you’re born with.
It’s not something you get as the result of an injury or accident.
The primary force behind this rise and explosion in diverticulosis (and its infected version diverticulitis) is these three things:
  1.       Our shift away from real foods and into relying more and more on processed foods (which began around 1915)
  2.       The poor digestion that resulted from eating this way and
  3.       The impact on the large intestine (colon) from the poor digestion
Let’s take a closer look at these factors, see how you can help address diverticulosis if you’ve got it, and most importantly, see a story of success from someone who is feeling a whole lot better now.
The shift from food to whatchamacallits
Prior to about 1915 food used to mean meats, poultry, fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and eggs.
Now although those things still do exist (but are becoming increasingly adulterated), sadly they make up a smaller and smaller portion of what’s actually on our plates.
Instead now we are relying more and more on processed foods which are not only devoid of most or all of the naturally occurring nutrients in the food ingredients they started out with, but they’re also very difficult for your body to digest.
Note that similar statements can be made about fast food, and heaven knows that the lines aren’t getting any shorter at McDonald’s, Burger King and Taco Bell so we’re getting our share of those too.
In addition, instead of simpler meals like our grandparents enjoyed, we now sit down to smorgasbords made up of every kind of food on the planet (especially at restaurant buffets) which leads to digestive fireworks down below.
So is it any wonder that so many people are paying the price with a variety of digestive difficulties?
Poor digestion—problems north and south
When your digestion is ruined, it can show itself in a number of ways.
When you have overproduction of acid in your stomach that comes sliding into your throat, it’s called acid reflux or GERD.
When your foods are badly broken down as they pass through the intestinal tract that can show itself as IBS, gas, bloating and constipation.
And if poor digestion and constipation continue long enough, eventually that can cause weakening in the colon wall, diverticula can form and voila—diverticulosis (and possibly diverticulitis) has made its home inside of you.
Better digestion = better intestinal health
The good news here is that you can help turn your digestive health around, even if you’re already suffering from diverticulosis or diverticulitis.
It’s never too late to start to feel better!
When you take safe, natural measures to help your digestion to be accomplished more thoroughly and efficiently, you can see a dramatic difference in how you feel, and it can happen faster than you think.
Here are the most significant steps you can take toward better digestive (and overall!) health:
1- Change what goes IN
When you ditch the complex, hard-to-digest meals, processed junk, fast food and soda and instead eat real foods in easy to digest combinations, you will likely be astonished at how quickly your body responds.
Some people have seen a difference with the very first meal!
And if you don't know where to start, I'll help you with the Great Taste No Pain health system.
In the Great Taste No Pain manuals, I spell out the physiological reasons why eating a typical modern diet is so detrimental to your health, and why eating certain foods together can make ALL the difference in the world for you.  Plain and simple, and very easy to understand.
When your body can digest your foods more easily and efficiently, digestive agony can quickly subside.
Now, if you have gluten challenges on top of everything else, no worries.  Great Taste No Gluten is for you.
You'll get the same food pairing information as in Great Taste No Pain, along with a collection of delicious gluten free creations and gluten free substitution guides.
2- Help what goes ON
Having a long history of digestive problems means that you have probably expended way more enzymes trying to accomplish digestion than Nature intended you to…and your body may have trouble making enough for your needs at this point.
If you suspect that your body may be challenged with low enzyme production (this especially true if you've been a Tums or purple pill popper or have had a hard-to-digest diet for a long time), or want to help conserve what you do have left, enzyme supplementation can make a big difference in your digestion.
And a great quality digestive enzyme supplement is Digestizol Max.
Digestizol Max is loaded with 14 natural, plant-derived enzymes (so it's even OK for vegetarians) that will give your body a boost in breaking down everything you eat--proteins, starches, carbs and fats alike.
Plus its herbal formula can help soothe an inflamed digestive tract.
3- Help the little guys with a big job
The average person who eats a typical modern diet is very likely walking around with seriously imbalanced gut flora.
And if you add in the possibilities of stress, medication use, exposure to environmental toxins or past or present use of antibiotics (which all harm your gut flora too), chances are great MOST people have or are close to having harmful bacteria overgrowth (aka dysbiosis).
Not only does this hamper your digestion but it can mean your immune system is practically non-existent.
That's why an effective probiotic supplement like Super Shield is so helpful for the vast majority of people.
Super Shield pays attention to both of your intestines--it contains certain bacteria that inhabit the small intestine (lactobacillus) and others that live in your colon (Bifidobacteria).  So you're covered from one end of that long intestinal tract to the other!
And less gas, bloating and constipation could soon be a reality for YOU…as well as saying goodbye to diverticulitis attacks.
It’s also very important to help your intestinal flora recover from antibiotic use, which happens to be a common treatment for diverticulitis.
The horse’s mouth
Now if you’re thinking all of this sounds good but you’re still not sure how effective it could possibly be, let me have Jody tell you her story of bouncing back from ischemic colitis and diverticulitis:
Dear Sherry:
Here is my success story with your "Great Taste No Pain" plan.
In October 2012, I had my first trip to the ER for severe abdominal pain.  I had no idea, except hoping against hope it was not peritonitis. That was the only thing I could think would put me in the level of pain I was in.
After a brief triage, during which time they administered morphine, a specialist was called.  The gastroenterologist ordered a colonoscopy for the next day.  I was 63 at the time and had never had one, but had worked for doctors who performed them in Dallas, and knew from the patients’ statements during follow up appointments that I didn't WANT one either.
The test was performed, and I was diagnosed with ischemic colitis.  Ok, my follow up included a diet from the doctor, to soothe the effects, and keep things moving along easier.  I was told if it did not heal, I would need surgery to remove the portion of my colon that was affected.  So, here I went.
Everything "moved along" fine for just over two years.  Last December I again woke up one morning with severe cramping in my abdomen.  I had an appointment that day for eye surgery and was apprehensive, so I attributed it to nerves, which causes the same effects to my abdomen (Knotting in my "belly" and gas).
Later that day it never went away, so the next morning I saw my GP.  He examined me, took a blood sample and told me to go home, pack a bag and go to the hospital.  I had a bad infection in my intestines.  Yes this time it was diverticulitis.  I groaned.  What is it?  He told me.  I said is it worse than what I had last time?  He said NO, this can be treated strictly with your diet.
I spent four days in the hospital, on two constant IV drips of antibiotics and nothing but liquids to eat.
While in the hospital I studied constantly on my diagnosis.  Upon returning home, I had a visit to my daughter planned as well as a lunch with former schoolmates.  Most everyone knew of my problems and two of them have diverticulitis as well as other digestive disorders.  Cecelia took my email address, gave me your name and web address and I then signed up for "Great Taste No Pain" program.
The list of foods I had been given from my doctor had no directions that included "combining" foods or any of the wonderful advice I have been receiving from you.  My friend knew I could not afford the book right now and graciously mailed me her copy.
The plan has made changes in my health, no pain and MORE ENERGY.  I am high metabolism naturally and require at least four small meals/snacks during the day, and with your help and some additional advice from my two friends I feel wonderful!
Thanks with all my little Southern Heart,
Jody K.

PPS: Jeanne’s feeling better too!

Hi Sherry,
I have been on your Great Taste No Pain plan. Two months ago I was put in the hospital for 4 days with a bad case of diverticulitis. After many antibiotics, I was feeling much better but a few weeks later started with a few more pains and put on more antibiotics. My doctor, whom I feel is wonderful, never gave me a diet to follow.
When I read about you from a friend, I thought I would like to give your diet a try. I feel great and I have lost 5 pounds besides. I hope to keep on this healthy way of life forever.
Thanks for all you do to help people with tummy problems.
Jeanne
